Abstract
Binocular Helmet Mounted Displays (HMDs) are a critical part of the aircraft system, allowing information to be presented to the aviator with stereoscopic 3D (S3D) depth, potentially enhancing situational awareness and improving performance. The utility of S3D in an HMD may be linked to an individual’s ability to perceive changes in binocular disparity (stereo acuity). Though minimum stereo acuity standards exist for most military aviators, current test methods may be unable to characterise this relationship. Stereo acuity was measured using three digital disparity discrimination tests along with the analogue TNO test currently used by the British military to qualify aircrew. Participants performed a simulated flying task while differentiating between two warning alerts appearing in their HMD which were presented in four different conditions of stereo depth. Both physiological measurements and subjective questionnaires were used to assess cognitive workload. The addition of S3D to a warning alert in an HMD did not improve performance. Though peripheral skin temperature decreased in all conditions, suggesting an increase in cognitive load, there was no specific relationship to S3D presentation. However, those with poorer stereo acuity reported greater levels of workload in some S3D conditions. Additionally, computer-based tests were able to measure stereo acuity to threshold in a more reliable and repeatable manner, eliminating a number of limitations seen with the TNO test. These results do not necessarily support incorporating stereo symbology in an HMD for a warning alert or altering current stereo acuity standards.
