Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to explore the relationship "between theology and psychotherapy within psychiatry. It takes the work of a theologian and a psychiatrist and having presented these in turn, explores the emergent relationship between them.
Thus Part I explores the theology of Bultmann, in order to discover its central motifs, its internal coherence, and its relationship to other disciplines. It also considers the relationship "between theory and practice in this particular theology.
Part II explores L. Binswanger’s understanding of the theory and practice of psychotherapy and psychiatry. It follows his search for a conceptuality adequate for the subject-matter of his discipline, and his account of the place of psychiatry within the disciplines concerned with man and his well-being.
Part III brings the two preceding sections together in an inter-disciplinary study designed (l) to discover whether it is possible for one man to employ both these disciplines at once, and (2) to enquire into the possibility of dialogue between them. It concentrates on the question whether a systematic relationship between them can be established on the basis of their common allegiance to Heidegger.
There is an appendix which consists of two case-studies, carried out concurrently with the systematic exploration, in an attempt to use the work of Bultmann and Binswanger at the level of actual relationships.
