This project investigated surface staining of CoCrMo biomedical femoral components prior to implantation. Surface analysis and characterisation showed it was a corrosion process that caused the staining of the surface of the components that developed when stored at elevated humidity and temperature. An extensive series of CoCrMo femoral components were manufactured under different processing parameters prior to subjecting them to an accelerating ageing process and detailed surface characterisation. The accelerated ageing process reproduced the surface staining successfully however the processing parameters were shown to have only a minor impact on time to staining to occur. The environmental storage conditions proved to be the dominant factor in the initiation of the surface staining on the surface of the orthopaedic femoral components.
