Abstract
A series of different stoichiometries were prepared of LiH and MgH2. The samples were collected at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10 and 13 hours of milling. The as milled material contained LiH and MgH2, with modifications to the unit cell volume of both reagents. There is also an amorphous phase present that was not characterised by diffraction.
Thermal decompositions showed a decrease in onset temperature of the MgH2 with increased milling time; the increased milling time also induced an increase in kinetics. This modification of the decomposition behaviour is attributed to a reduction in grain size, typically observed with MgH2.
Raman spectroscopy revealed phases(s) that could not be identified. Any influence of these phases on the decomposition mechanism/ temperature was not observed during the first desorption. This work has shown that the mixture of LiH and MgH2 has no effect on the desorption properties of either phase up to 500 °C.
