Abstract

Jessica Stewart Dismorr (1885-1939) has received only a brief acknowledgement in histories of British modernism. Her connections with Vorticism have ‘validated’ her as an artist worthy of canonical stature, but even here, Vorticist historiography situates her as marginal and disempowered. This thesis, which forms the first extensive study of Dismorr’s career, is constructed around two clear methods of investigation. Firstly, it documents and reproduces over one hundred works of art by Dismorr and elucidates basic factual and biographical information.

Secondly, in an attempt to contextualise Dismorr’s works, this thesis forges links with debates of a much broader theoretical nature. Specifics are balanced against the general in an attempt to define and extend received knowledge. Its thematic framework proposes many windows of enquiry, through which we may view and understand Dismorr both as a woman and as part of an art world. Numerous factors emerge as significant shaping forces within her life, including her constant desire to operate within the arenas of the new and the modern, her commitment to avant-garde groupings and networks, her strong support system of female friends and her self-fashioning as a ‘new woman.’
