Abstract

This thesis consists of two volumes submitted by Henry Briscoe as part of the Clinical Psychology Doctorate. The first chapter of volume I consists of a meta-analysis of the relationship between theory of mind and anxiety. The key finding here was that anxiety and theory of mind were negatively related in children. That is, higher levels of anxiety were related to poorer performance on theory of mind tasks. The second chapter details research on the effect of anxiety and ethnicity on perspective taking. Here, it was found that when the target was of a different ethnicity, participants were less likely to take their perspective spontaneously – regardless of if they were anxious. The third chapter is an outline of the previous two chapters but for a lay audience.

The second volume consist clinical practice reports (CPRs). CPR1 details a Cognitive Behavioural formulation and a systemic formulation of a young person with difficulties with aggression. CPR2 is a service evaluation of staff wellbeing in a child and adolescent mental health service. CPR3 Is a case study of man with learning disabilities struggling with anxiety and described a cognitive behavioural CPR4 described a cognitive behavioural intervention for a 67-year-old woman with depression. Finally, CPR5, is an abstract summarising a Single Case Experimental Design for a woman experiencing eating difficulties.
