Abstract
The shift towards embracing the place-based approach in urban regeneration has highlighted the importance of enhanced inclusivity and increased capacity for participatory approach in urban governance, collaborative planning and project implementation. The change from government to governance has led to exploring the relationship between the government, private companies, and civil societies in the distribution of power and negotiating decisions on economic development and the city's sense of place. The Malaysian context's historic urban centre regeneration is investigated in this thesis by exploring emotions at play in collaborative and participatory processes of placemaking in three cities: Kuala Lumpur, George Town and Ipoh. This is explained by unpacking the urban regeneration agenda, the government-market-civil society relationship, the market forces and local social demography shaped by historical and current events, as well as investigating the motivations to bottom-up community actions. This thesis contributes to expanding the understanding of participatory placemaking within the Global South context, particularly Southeast Asia, influenced by contextual forces shaping its distinctive models and its relation to historic urban centre regeneration.
