Abstract

This thesis consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 is a systematic review of the literature exploring the available evidence on the effectiveness of cognitive defusion. Cognitive defusion was found to be an effective approach in improving chosen outcomes. Chapter 2 is an empirical research study exploring two processes of the psychological flexibility model of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in people with persistent pain. The data showed that cognitive fusion and self-as-content were associated with psychological distress in this sample of people with persistent pain, as predicted by the model. Chapter 3 is a public dissemination document, which provides a brief and accessible overview of the systematic review and empirical study.
