Abstract

This thesis comprises a meta-ethnography and an empirical paper. The meta-ethnography explores the experiences of professionals who work with parents with Learning Disabilities. The findings suggested difficulties with the level of knowledge, support and liaison when working with this client group. Differences in power, conflicting priorities and personal impact on professionals were also highlighted.

The empirical paper explores how fathers with Learning Disabilities who have had their children removed from their care experience and make sense of it. Five fathers and five professionals with relevant experiences were interviewed. The findings suggested that the fathers find court involvement difficult, that their identities are impacted and that long-lasting challenges subsequently follow. Trauma and the male gender role were also highlighted.
