Abstract

Building Information Modelling (BIM) Level of Development (LOD) data specification is a major concern for the implementation of BIM management processes. In the UK, Level 2 BIM and Level 3 BIM industry maturity measures are drivers to BIM implementation. Product Data Templates (PDT) is a method used to specify BIM element data for Level 2 BIM processes. However, this method is not optimal for LOD specification. In order to advance towards Level 3 BIM LOD data standardisation, the study of data creation using Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) such as the Information Delivery Manual (IDM) was studied. It is hypothesised whether the IDM can create the right environment to specify LOD data across the wider Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry and to advance in Level 3 BIM processes. The informational perspective of the IDM is investigated in this thesis using a novel method to test and validate the creation of BIM Model attributes by linking Exchange Requirements (ERs) to a LOD standard. However, the LOD can be specified differently in different countries making its definition within the IDM complex. Therefore, the IDM intrinsic perspectives were studied under a novel Framework for LOD Implementation created using Grounded Theory. This enabled the study of the behavioural IDM perspective on a small group of BIM professionals. The findings suggest that a LOD specified as per project stage is detrimental for project time, cost and quality performance. Although, the generalisation of study is limited to “made to stock” for electrical BIM use and “engineered to order” products for clash detection BIM use, this LOD Framework could help improve understanding of data specification using the LOD standard for any AEC project.
