Abstract
The analysis of solidification in three dimensions is a very novel area in materials science. As a result there are few current methodologies to analyse directionally solidified samples in three dimensions. This thesis forms the basis for further projects within the MIcrostructure evolution in CASTing of technical aluminium alloys under diffusive and controlled convective conditions (MICAST) framework providing image analysis methodologies for use on samples solidified under varying gravitational conditions.
Methods are put forward for analysing large Computerised Tomography (CT) volumes of Al-10 wt% Cu alloy. This includes the trialling and comparing of a number of novel centre finding techniques to ones obtained from the literature. This was tested on samples directionally solidified under varying withdrawal rates. Information on the cellular spacing and dendritic interaction along the length of the samples was obtained. The results showed that the cellular array adapts over a distance which is dependent upon the diffusion length and therefore the velocity also.
