This thesis is submitted in order to meet the academic requirements for the award of Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, from the School of Psychology, University of Birmingham. This volume comprises of two parts. The first part is a theoretical review which evaluates empirical papers examining major depressive disorder (MDD) within a cognitive framework. A tentative model based upon a diathesis-stress framework is postulated which may account for the high prevalence of depression in type 2 diabetes. This paper was prepared for submission to the journal Diabetes/ Metabolism Research and Reviews. The second part is an empirical study which investigates self-efficacy and attachment style upon support of dietary self-care activities in people with type 2 diabetes and their spouse. This paper was prepared for submission to the journal Psychology and Health.
