This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Clinical Psychology at the School of Psychology, University of Birmingham. This volume comprises two parts. The first part is a review of the literature regarding the role of attachment processes in the eating disorders. The second part is a qualitative study that investigates the personal meaning of eating disorder symptoms. The literature review suggests that although attachment processes appear to play a role in the development and maintenance of eating disorders, the precise relationship is unclear. This paper has been prepared for submission to the British Journal of Clinical Psychology. The empirical study uses interpretative phenomenological analysis in an effort to understand the sense people make of their eating disorder experiences. This paper has been prepared for submission to the Journal of Health Psychology. The Executive Summary is also submitted in this volume.
