This thesis consists of the original play ‘Current Regimes’ and a Critical Analysis on the process of writing and re-writing the play. ‘Current Regimes’ examines the concept of family in different settings. It takes an audience on a journey to Spain, where a same sex couple, Fiona and Caroline have gone on holiday. There, the couple are forced to confront their own understanding of family as they journey into Caroline’s genealogy- the final movements of her International Brigadier Grandfather fighting in the Spanish Civil War. ‘Current Regimes’ hopes to engage with theatrical story telling whilst examining two contemporary issues: the linguistics of Exhumations and Gay Rights. The critical analysis examines the craft of playwriting with ‘Current Regimes’ as case study. It discusses the diverging theatrical traditions contributing to the writing process and the deployment of dramatic devices within the play.
