"Cane Island‟ examines the influence of outsiders on the indigenous by focusing on the experiments of ecologist Grace Zucker and student Chris Stevenson on a remote islet near the Isles of Scilly. They implement the Mating Call method and various means of execution in an attempt to find a solution to Australia‟s cane toad infestation. During their time on the islet they discover a peculiar man who appears to be living alone on the island and eating indigestible substances. Grace theorises that he may have unique biological adaptations in his digestive system and with time and food running out, she and Chris must decide how far they are willing to go to find out.
