Abstract

Richards examined the building trades in the Midlands in the seventeenth century because of the advance made by the capitalist class during that period. He concluded that many masons were craftsmen and capitalists with modest resources and that the mere workman builders, who could also be skilled craftsmen and capitalists, seemed not to have gained the social status of the merchants.
