From Introduction:

The development of Glacial Geology has been a most rapid one. It began practically within the memory of many living men, or it least during the last century. Since the study has commenced however an enormous amount of time has been given to it, and a huge bulk of literature has sprung up.

Playfair at the beginning of last century pointed out the importance of glaciers as agents of transport for blocks of stone of all sizes.
