Abstract

This thesis comprises two parts. The first part is a systematic literature review evaluating the long-term (one year and over) effects of group parent training programmes. From 19 selected papers findings suggested that the positive effects of attending a parenting programme can last up to 14 years after the programme has finished in the areas of child behaviour, parents’ own feelings of well-being, and parenting skills, style and competence. The second part is an empirical study of an uncontrolled pre, post and follow-up evaluation of the Understanding Your Child’s Behaviour (UYCB) group: A parenting group based on the Solihull Approach. Parents attending a 10 week UYCB group were asked to complete questionnaires about their child’s behavior, their own feelings of well-being and their relationship with their child at the start, end and 3 months after attending the group. A total of 160 parents took part in the study. The results showed that immediately after finishing the group parents reported improvements in their child’s behaviour, their own feelings of well-being, and their relationship with their child. Similar findings were found at the 3 month follow-up, suggesting that the group can be helpful for some months after it has finished.
