Abstract

There is a growing body of work that outlines the manner in which sport can have a n impact on positive youth development from academics, practitioners, and government departments and policy. With much public money allocated to social intervention projects that use sport as a key vehicle for delivery, it is becoming increasingly important to understand these programmes, particularly in terms of their long lasting effectiveness, monitoring, and evaluation (Coalter, 2003/7).
Considering it is the coaches themselves who act as the 'orchestrators' of these programmes, this research sought to understand firstly, how community coaches view the effectiveness of sport intervention programmes, and secondly, whether these programmes that they were involved in led to appreciable changes in pro-social behaviour. The methodology used interviews with nine coaches with significant experience of sport intervention programmes. The framework used to explain the data was Jennings et al’s (2006) Critical Youth Empowerment Model. This theoretical framework, with its dimensions of supported environments, meaningful participation, incrementally given roles of responsibility, and contribution to community affairs, seemed to reflect much of what was felt the coaches 'do' or 'facilitate' in contributing to the impact and benefits of the programmes in which they worked.
