Abstract
This thesis examines the ways in which contemporary productions of medieval English theatre have either attempted to recreate perceived original theatrical practices or have sought to distance themselves from those practices. As a case study, The Annunciation, from York's mystery cycle, is the focus of the work, which includes practice as well as theory based research. Areas analyzed include: historiography, design, voice/text, acting style, and directing style.
