| AbstractThis thesis offers a detailed, analytical account of six post-war productions of Hamlet, presented in the main house of The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, later The Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, in the years 1948, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1965 and 1970. Each production is separately considered to determine the ways in which its director has reflected changing theatrical styles and attitudes to the interpretation of the central character. The accounts are based upon the evidence of prompt books, production records and contemporary reviews. Each chapter follows the course of the play and is supported by an appendix giving details of the text used, and listing cuts and textual variations. The appendices also contain cast-lists, with details of production personnel, together with lists of the plays produced in each respective
season. Selected diagrams, ground-plots and information reproduced from production records are also included.
