Abstract
This thesis describes two approaches to the preparation, from starch and model compounds, of carbamates derived from pesticidal amines and, in particular, alkylamino-1,3,5-triazines.
The first approach involved the preparation and reaction of a carbonate of starch containing 2,3-carbonates of the glucopyranoside residues. It was concluded that the carbonate method was not applicable to alkylamino-1,3,5-triazine. A carbonate of starch reacted satisfactorily with cyclohexylamine to give an N-cyclohexylcarbamoylstarch.
The second approach involved the preparations and reactions of carbamoyl chlorides. The reactions of N-methyl-N-phenylcarbamoyl chloride with a number of model alcohols were also made.
The results of some preliminary biological tests are reported, and the significance of the compounds reported in this thesis is discussed briefly in relation to their known or potential biological activity.
