Abstract

This thesis covers the relations between Great Britain and Russia from 1848 to 1856. In particular, it analyses: the foreign policy of Great Britain; relations between Great Britain and Russia to 1848; Russia and the Principalities; Russian intervention in Hungary; the Hungarian refugees; Don Pacifico; the fall of Palmerston; the position of the Tsar Nicholas in 1853; the question of the Holy Places; the mission of Prince Menshikov; the efforts to secure a settlement; the declaration of war; the influence of popular opinion; British policy with regard to the war; and the Treaty of Paris.
