Abstract

Charity attempts to explore the complex ethics at play in the morally ambiguous world of face-to-face charity fundraisers, who raise money on the streets of towns and cities across the country.

Dan St Claire the East Midlands Regional Manager of Fruitful Fundraising and two of his fundraisers Mark Curtis and Katie Rose are taken aback by the arrival of the imitable Oliver Jones. Oliver is a rep from Christian Choice a charity they hope will become Fruitful Fundraising’s newest client and a passionately patriotic émigré from Sierra Leone. The action takes place over 24 hours in two locations, in the regional office of Fruitful Fundraising and on Humberstone Gate, a street in Leicester city centre. As the play unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear that the company is in serious financial trouble and securing a contract with Christian Choice may well be their last chance to stop Fruitful Fundraising from going into administration. The question is to what degree are Mark, Dan and Katie willing to sacrifice their own ethics to secure their jobs and the future of the company.
