Abstract

The investigation is concerned with the analysis, by model study, of the complex problem of flow behaviour on cascades of steps. Previous research is reviewed, and detailed descriptions of the experimental equipment and procedure used in this study are provided. By recognising the factors which influence fluid motion on a cascade, a basis for predicting prototype behaviour from model measurements is established. The flow patterns and conditions formed on cascades of constant geometry steps are described, and the effect of discharge intensity and the various step parameters on these features is examined. The results of the study are presented in a series of dimensionless plots which readily yield the energy and force of flows leaving cascades. The influence of scale on the dimensionless relationships established by the investigation is examined by comparing the relationships obtained with models identical in all but size. . The use of these dimensionless relationships in stilling basin design is considered and procedures for assessing the leading dimensions of prototype structures are recommended. Finally, procedures for the design of prototype spillage arrangements incorporating stepped spillways are suggested and their application is illustrated by the design of cascades and stilling basins for a typical reservoir project.
