Abstract
This thesis examines the text and transmission of the Epistle to the Colossians, with the goal of refining the selection of Greek manuscripts to be used in the Editio Critica Maior. After an account of some of the issues regarding the origin of Colossians and a summary of the history of scholarship, it presents a full collation of 74 manuscripts of Colossians. This is followed by a commentary on the variant readings in Colossians, including a study of the gender of the noun πλοῦτος in New Testament manuscripts. The selection of variation units in Text und Textwert is examined, and proposals advanced for a revised set of test passages which would result in a better foundation for choosing manuscripts for a scholarly edition. A chapter is devoted to describing manuscripts which were not available for the original Text und Textwert analysis. Finally, there is a study of scribal harmonization in the textual tradition of Colossians, with a particular investigation of the treatment of greetings formulae in the Pauline Epistles.
