Abstract

The origin and nature of Solanum ajanhuiri Juz. et Buk., a cultivated diploid potato, has been studied in the present work.

The intra-specific progenies of S. ajanhuiri showed "genetic breakdown" and phenotypic segregation typical of an F2 generation. The segregant plants demonstrated that S. ajanhuiri originated from natural crosses between primitive forms of the cultivated diploid species S. stenotomum and the wild diploid species S. meqistacrolobum.

Potato fields in North Bolivia where S. ajanhuiri, S. stenotomum and other cultivated species were growing were found to be invaded by large populations of the wild S. meqistacrolobum. Successful hybridization between the two putative parents was obtained in the glasshouse as well as under "natural" conditions when the two species were planted together in the experimental field.

Further evidence that S. stenotomum and S. meqistacrolobum were involved in the ancestry of S. ajanhuiri has been found by comparing the species with its putative parents and with synthetic hybrids between S. stenotomum and S. meqistacrolobum, using a number of taxonomic methods, including morphology, pollen fertility, chromosome number, chromatography of leaf phenolics, disc electrophoresis of tuber proteins, etc.

The results reported in this study have provided very strong indication that S. ajanhuiri is of hybridogenic origin and is derived from natural S. stenotomum x S. meqistacrolobum crosses.
