Abstract
This thesis examines the mnemonic practices of Marius D’Assigny (1643-1717) in relationship to the developing methodology and discoveries of contemporary performance research. The context for my study is provided by the historical work of Frances Yates (1899-1981), which focuses upon the Renaissance European "Art of Memory" and its importance to the development of Hermetic thought. She suggests avenues of enquiry which my study investigates. A practical exploration of D’Assigny's "Art of Memory" is offered, through the rehearsal and performance experiences encountered while developing a solo performance of Shakespeare·s "Macbeth". The discoveries of this project permit a new consideration of the mnemonic processes in dramatic performance, and in particular an development of Yates' propositions concerning the significance of Shakespeare's performance space, The Globe Theatre. The thesis proposes that the performer's action has a mnemonic dimension which might be considered a means of knowing by doing.
