Abstract

In this thesis I set forth several arguments against substance dualism and in defense of materialism (and by extension, other anthropological models like Neo-Aristotelian dualism). Despite popular claims from Christian philosophers and theologians that substance dualism is the only available—or at least the best—option for the committed orthodox Christian, I argue to the contrary. I employ a modest Christological anthropology that aids in adjudicating some thorny debates about the mind and body. Therefore, my aim in this thesis is twofold: (1) to consider whether traditional Christology ought to motivate one to be a substance dualist and (2) whether traditional Christology conflicts with materialism. As a research program, I believe this thesis is generative of new ways of thinking about both the mind and body and Christology more generally.
