Abstract

This study looks at the fate of the neoaortic root following the arterial switch for transposition. The study aims to address the hypothesis; is there variability in the fate of the neoaortic root described in the literature? And whether this may, in part, be determined by the operative approach used at the arterial switch. The study also aims to assess whether patients who underwent the arterial switch during childhood in Birmingham demonstrate progressive neoaortic root dilatation on serial CMR imaging into adulthood and their incidence of aortic dissection and surgical reintervention. The first section of the study is a narrative review which follows after findings that there is heterogeneity in the data of reporting the outcomes of the neoaortic root. The second section reports a clinical dataset from Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, showing the collection of neoaortic root measurements of 205 patients following arterial switch for transposition at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
