Abstract

Scholars of Korean Christian history have often identified two different varieties of Holy Spirit movements in operation in the country: one, the Socio-Prophetic Movement, places emphasis on socio-political engagement and the other, the Charismatic-Pious Movement, emphasises charismatic experience and inner-pious belief. Within this binary grouping, many groups who focus on charismatic elements remain apolitical. In contrast, those that focus mainly on socio- political issues tend to ignore inner purification, the salvation of souls and spiritual awakening in the power of the Holy Spirit. The resulting one-sidedness of each movement may cause weaknesses in Korean Christianity and society. Accordingly, I insist that there is a need for a Holistic Movement that embraces both Socio-Prophetic and Charismatic-Pious elements, which can bring holistic salvation for individuals and society. I argue that there have indeed already been Holistic Holy Spirit movements, such as Rev. Gil Seon-Ju’s 1907 Pyongyang Great Revival Movement. Therefore, I suggest that there are three Holy Spirit movements: the Socio- Prophetic Movement (SPM), the Charismatic-Pious Movement (CPM), and the Holistic Holy Spirit Movement (HHM). For each movement, I will present two case studies that highlight their positive and negative influences on Korean church and society and examine their pneumatologies, socio-political influence, and relationship with traditional religions and culture. I will address the unique characteristics of the Holistic Holy Spirit Movement and demonstrate how it combines both the spiritual and socio-political spheres through Christians working together in a vertical relationship with God and a horizontal relationship with others in church and society.

For the Socio-Prophetic Movement (SPM), this thesis will analysis Lee Hyun-Phil's movement in the 1940s and 50s and Ann Byung-Mu's movement during the 1970s and 80s. For the Charismatic-Pious Holy Spirit Movement (CPM), this thesis will focus on Kim Ik-Du's spiritual revival movement before Liberation, followed by the study of Ha Yong-Jo's Onnuri Community Church after Liberation. Then, for the Holistic Holy Spirit Movement (HHM), this thesis will highlight Gil Soon-Ju's Pyongyang Great Revival in 1907, and the 'Cha-Ba-A' movement in which Onnuri Church actively participated.
