Abstract

This study investigates personal, social, and environmental factors influencing Birmingham secondary school students to cycle for school and non-school travel. A mixed-method study was conducted with 550 students aged 11-15years from 5 schools in Birmingham completing an online and paper questionnaire survey and a semi-structured interview with 14 transport stakeholders promoting cycling in secondary school.
Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS. The quantitative study showed that having someone to cycle with (co-cycling) was a major social factor influencing students to cycle for school and non-school journeys. Consequently, this factor also increases the perception of safety among students for school journeys and cycling within their neighbourhoods. Furthermore, it was found that students had increased safety concerns to cycle for non-school journeys. This was confirmed by the increased motorised journeys used for non-school journeys. In contrast, however, students perceived cycling within their neighbourhoods as safe. This suggests that there is a high chance, non-school journeys might not have been within the students’ neighbourhood. Further research is required to understand students' non-school travel patterns within Birmingham.
Using NVIVO and manual analysis method, five main themes including child factor, social factor, physical and environmental factor, and governmental factor emerged from the thematic analysis of the qualitative data. In each theme, participants highlighted various barriers to promoting cycling. Furthermore, the qualitative study revealed a significant focus on promotional activities for school journeys and less focus on non-school journeys. Consequently, this study recommends an increased focus on activities to advance non-school cycling.
