Abstract
This thesis shows the design of luminescent nanoparticles that can be used for theranostic applications in nanomedicine, focusing on drug delivery and detection. In this study, two nanoplatform designs are used.
Silica NPs are functionalised with luminescent Ln complexes, whilst simultaneously encapsulating an anticancer drug, in order to monitor drug release. This anticancer drug acts as a light harvesting unit for sensitised Ln luminescence, enabling drug sensing through ‘on and off’ Ln signals. We show the promising use of these NPs as diagnostic tools for drug sensing.
We also report the functionalisation of gold NPs with a dibenzoylmethane molecule attached via thiol bonds, with the ability to bind to Ln ions, and sensitise Ln luminescence.
