Abstract
Overtopping and internal erosion are two major causes of failure in earth and rockfill dams. Installing cement-bentonite barrier (CBB) is expected to minimise the likelihood of failure. CBB was reported to be susceptible to erosion and the resistance of the barriers against erosion is still poorly understood. This dissertation aims to provide an overview on the past researches pertaining to the methodology employed to assess erodibility behaviour of geomaterials and to improve the understanding the erodibility of CBB by investigating the parameters governed the erosion phenomenon. The previous researches on the erodibility of CBB was found to be problematic for several aspects: hydraulic condition, erodibility parameter, material composition, and test apparatus. This dissertation focuses to study the erodibility behaviour of CBB samples from two main parameters: hydraulic condition (pressure differential, flowrate) and erodibility parameters (hydraulic shear stress, velocity, eroded hole diameter/volume and erosion rate). These parameters were assessed under the varying mix proportion which mainly varying the GGBS percentage and curing duration (from 7 to 90 days). The erodibility parameters obtained from the test were correlated with other characteristics such as strength, moisture content and hydraulic fracture. In addition, the effect of confining pressure to the erodibility behaviour was also explored.
