Abstract
Primary to secondary school transition is considered to be challenging for pupils. Research lacks a cohesive approach to the integration of the child's voice, particularly in relation to pupils who attend small schools (≤ 75 pupils). This thesis addresses this gap in the literature by investigating how pupils from small schools construct the transition to secondary school (RQ1), identifying strategies that they consider to be helpful (RQ2). This research emphasises how, and to what extent, pupil voice can support the transition (RQ3). Working with Y6 pupils, the research used three tasks (individual and group) and the results were analysed using thematic analysis. The results suggest that pupils consider the transition as a change, particularly in relation to three key themes; environmental changes, changes in relationships and personal growth. Based on the findings, an intervention approach is proposed, offering a child-led approach to support the transition. This thesis concludes by reflecting on the research limitations and suggestions for future research. Implications for EP practice are discussed.
